Fun ways to include kids in fitness resolutions

Fun ways to include kids in fitness resolutions

TUESDAY, Jan. 3 (HealthDay News) -- Parents can involve their children in any New Year's fitness resolutions they may have in the works, says one fitness expert, by making exercise seem fun and exciting.

"If you say, 'We're going to take the kids out for a walk this evening,' most kids are going to say, 'Wait, we have to leave the video games or television?'" cautioned Michael Berry, chair of the health and exercise science department at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., in a university news release. "Kids like to play games, they like to be engaged, so exercise needs to be something that is sports-oriented or game-oriented."

Berry noted that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises kids to get at least an hour a day of physical activity, including recreation that involves muscle strengthening.

Jasper to reconsider smoking ban

TARRANT, AL (WBRC)-

The Jasper City Council could amend the city's smoking ban at their regular meeting Tuesday.

The law took effect in October and prohibits smoking in public places. It's been a hot-button issue in Jasper and the talk of the diner at Jasper's Diner.

"We lost a lot of our regular customers," said Margaret Free, owner of Jasper's Diner.

Since the city passed the ban less than three months ago, Free says regulars and hours are diminishing.

"We've had to cut our hours down. We're having to close at 3:00 p.m. now because we've had to make some adjustments on the money wise," said Free. The loss of profit has forced free to let go of four employees.

She says the ban needs to be lifted but people like Steve Odom say it's refreshing to finally visit a smoke-free business.

New Year week forecast: cold with a Red Flag Warning

New Year week forecast: cold with a Red Flag Warning

It's the first week of the New Year and we begin it with sunshine and breezy conditions.  Very dry air, with dewpoints in the teens to low 20s, along with windy conditions, NW winds at 20-to-30 mph,  has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning.  In other words, outdoor burning is not recommended.

Lots of sunshine yesterday warmed up our surface temperatures enough to keep the thermometer from plummeting below freezing this morning.  However, Tuesday morning and afternoon look to be our coldest temperatures this week.  Tomorrow morning's temps will likely drop into the low 20s...highs tomorrow in the low 40s.

Expect clear to partly cloudy skies through Friday with warmer temperatures each day.

At this point, the weekend brings overcast skies along with a slight chance of rainfall.

Free New Year's towing from AAA Alabama

Free New Year's towing from AAA Alabama

New Year's Eve is a time for celebration and fun, but AAA Alabama is hoping that folks won't drive if they've had a little too much champagne. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more traffic fatalities occur on New Year's Day than any other in the year.

To help drivers get home safely this year, the organization is offering a free towing service, Tow-for-Life, to drivers who perhaps shouldn't be behind the wheel. The program is open to all Alabamians, not just AAA members. It will be available from 6 p.m. Friday Dec. 30 through 6 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1.
