Catfish Grabblin'

Catfish Grabblin'

There is a popular pastime in the South that many would classify as “Extreme Fishing.” It’s called “Catfish Grabblin’” or some prefer the term “noodling.” Extreme sports may be a new fad, but grabblin’ has been around for centuries, although anyone outside the fishing community has probably never heard of it.

Jasper City Library adds 12 iMacs for patrons' use

The Jasper City Library recently added 12 new iMac computers to their collection of resources for library patrons to use. Three other iMac computers have been delivered to libraries in Sumiton and Carbon Hill, with more coming to Winston County soon.

Jasper City Library previously offered 7-year-old Gateway computers that were outdated and more susceptible to viruses, requiring the library to ban patrons from using flash drives to save information. The library expects the number of computer users to rise with the addition of the iMacs, which were purchased from a grant received through the Broadband U.S.A. Initiative.

The Jasper City Library is located at 98 18th Street East and is open Monday through Friday from 9:15 a.m. until 5:45 p.m.

New mine application deepens controversy surrounding Mulberry Fork drinking water

Jasper contemplates ordinance against dangerous dogs

The mayor of Jasper is taking steps to address a problem with vicious dogs in neighborhoods.

Bill Blazer's wife was attacked by a neighbor's pit bull that escaped in May. She was left with bad scars on the inside of her left leg and the dog's teeth marks could not be stitched.

It was such a traumatic experience that his wife didn't want to talk on camera about it. Because of complaints about vicious dogs, Mayor Sonny Posey has put together a six person committee to create an ordinance.

Bill Blazer wants the city to specifically ban pit bulls before somebody is else is attacked like his wife was.

Blazer said, "Look at the overall picture. Look at all the states that have banned pit bulls, look at all the research that says pit bulls are unpredictable."

Vicious dogs were the main topic at a city council meeting this week.

There were some folks who spoke out against a breed specific ordinance.

Forestry Commission donates ambulance to Cordova

The Alabama Forestry Commission is donating an ambulance to the Cordova Volunteer Fire Department on Thursday, July 14. The department lost its ambulance when the April 27 tornado struck downtown Cordova and destroyed the fire department.

The AFC acquired the new ambulance through a federal Firefighter Property Program which allows excess military property from the Department of Defense to be given to local emergency service providers.

The donation will take place at 3:30 p.m. at the Cordova Town Center, which is located at the intersection of Chambers Street and First Street.
