Millions of teenagers across the world are inviting their classmates to gather around their school's flagpole for a time of prayer for the 21st Annual See You at the Pole.

Before school, students will join together at their school's flagpole in prayer for their friends, school, city, state and nation.

"The overall message of this passage is that the Lord will be there with us when we genuinely seek unity," said First Priority Greater Birmingham President Greg Davis. Former Carbon Hill city clerk charged with embezzlement of city funds

From the office of U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance:

BIRMINGHAM – A federal grand jury today indicted a former Carbon Hill court clerk for embezzling more than $55,000 from the Walker County town, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Maley.

An indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges Polly D. Haley, 53, of Winston County, with two counts of embezzling from the City of Carbon Hill, where she worked from July 1991 until July 2010. Count One charges Haley with stealing about $45,586 from the city between September 2008 and August 2009. Count Two charges her with stealing about $9,626 from the city between September 2009 and May 2010.

The indictment seeks to have Haley forfeit about $55,212 to the government as proceeds of criminal activity.

Public art project displays painted mules throughout Walker County

Public art project displays painted mules throughout Walker County

What started out as a community-wide art project of painting 20 fiberglass mules soon turned into more of a demand for the brightly-decorated creatures than the Walker County Arts Alliance had anticipated.

The arts council decided to cap the number of mules at 50 after quickly obtaining sponsorships for 40 of the mules, and thus the 50-Mule Team Public Art Project began, said Beth Sargent with the WCAA. Local companies, schools and individuals are paying to sponsor the painting of the mules and several of the mules are already on display throughout Walker County.  Once each mule is completed, the arts council plans to have an interactive map posted on their website to show visitors where each colorful creature is located.

Much like the annual Mule Day in Marion County, this local art project pays homage to the hard-working animals who labored on farms and mines for decades, helping Alabamians make a living from the land.

Online tag renewals can continue thanks to ALVerify

Online tag renewals can continue thanks to ALVerify

State officials have created a new way to verify the legal status for people buying or renewing license plate tags.

Alabama's new immigration law requires all Alabama residents to prove their legal status when dealing with the government, including purchasing license plates or registering vehicles.

A new web-based system called ALVerify will allow Alabama residents to prove their residency online by submitting their last name, license tag number and expiration date. With the new ALVerify service, Alabamians can continue to renew their tags or register vehicles online or by mail without having to stand in line at license offices.

The immigration bill has not yet gone into effect. It is still awaiting review by a federal judge.
